Life keeps moving. It has a way of making you forget the things that you've resolved to do. It's not that you don't try to stick to the important things, the things that really matter, things like your health, your family, your faith. With or without you, life moves on.
For the last couple of years I've read about Chris Brogan's 3 word challenge and kept telling myself that I wanted to do the same but, alas, life kept moving. This is different than a New Years Resolution, it goes deeper than that. It's less about "I want to lose 50 pounds," and more about defining what your year will be about. Of course, just like a New Years Resolution life keeps moving, with or without you reaching your goal. Below, I will define for you my 3 words but before I do I'd like to give you some ideas about how I'm going to make sure that I live them. First, I'll make sure to have them available, right on my nightstand, so that I reach for them, and read them, before grabbing my phone and checking my to-do list or email. Not only will I read them, I will do so out loud.
Next, I'll have them in my office where they are easily seen. I was thinking about making a nice plaque that I can hang on my wall, in a place that I will see them throughout the day. I'll also journal about them, about how I'm living my life through them. Some of these I will share here and on my Facebook page and on Twitter. Then, at the end of the day I will read them out loud again, but not just the words but what they mean and how they will change my life for the better. If you have other ideas about how to add more intention to your life, put them in the comment section below, I'd love to hear them.
My 3 Words
Below I will write my 3 words the very same way that I will read them out loud, in the first person. While it may be strange for you to read, I'm doing it this way to give you a better idea of what I am talking about when I say that I will read my 3 words out loud twice a day. My 3 words are:
Leadership. Health. Growth
I'm a leader. People count on me to lead them and I'll never let them down. I will lead wherever I am needed, from the front, from the middle and from the rear. I will read books on leadership, attend seminars and do everything I can to become a better leader. I'm a leader at home, I'm a leader at work, and I'm a leader at church. Today, I will be a better leader than I was yesterday. Today is another chance to be the leader my family and my team needs me to be. I'm a leader.
While I know that I'll will never reach the pinnacle of what a leader should be, I will use that knowledge to continually work towards it. I will not be swayed. I can't be stopped, I'm a leader. I will equip others to be leaders so that they can, in turn, enrich my life and lives of those around them. Today, yesterday and tomorrow I will lead.
For too long I've been complacent with my health. That stops today. I will do it for my wife, for my children and for those that I lead but above all else I will do it for myself. This isn't a diet, this is a change in who I am. A change in what I eat, a change in how I live, a change in the very core of who David N Johnson is. Health isn't just about what goes in your mouth, but also what goes in your mind. Today, I will focus on all aspects of my health. I will think before eating. I will think before filling my mind with things that go against my health and the person I'm becoming. Today, I will give thought to every aspect of my health. Today is a new day, tomorrow is behind me and even though I may have slipped the day before, today is a new day. Today, is the start of a new me.
Today, I grow. Today, I help others grow. I will learn things today that will help me become a better leader, that will help me to be healthier, things that will help me to equip my family and my team. I will continue to work towards greatness. Today, I am better than I was yesterday because I was intentional about it. Tomorrow, I will be better than I am today because I will be intentional about it. Today, I will read something uplifting, something that will make me better. Today, I will grow 10 feet taller, not in stature but in mind. Today, my focus is to learn something new that will allow me to reach new heights. Today, I will share what I've learned with those I love and care about. Today, I grow.
Well, there you have it. The 3 words that will define my 2015. What are yours? I encourage you to write about them, share them and post them in the comment section below. Here's to your 2015, Our. Best. Year. Ever!
