Courage. Love. Value. I chose these three words as reminders of the things that I want to work on each day, starting today and through 2019. I first got the idea from Chris Brogan, who has been doing this for years and then again in the book High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard.
The idea is to choose 3 words that remind you of the bigger picture, 3 words that keep you focused on what is important to YOU. I chose the words I chose over the course of a few days. Each one an important reminder of how I want to approach each day, each person I interact with, and how I want to live my life. I chose these words because I want to be a better person. I chose them because I want to inspire others through my ACTIONS.
What These Words Mean To Me
Love.
“Today, I’ll love. No matter what the day may bring with it or the people I may come across, I’ll love because everybody matters. I’ll love not only to lift the spirits of those that I interact with but also to keep my own mood elevated. By loving people, whether they deserve it or not, I make the world a better place. I make my life a better life.
Today, I’ll love because we all deserve to be treated as such. Some of us need it more than others and by loving everybody equally I’m better able to teach others to do the same.
Today I’ll love because He first loved us. I love because it’s one of the very few languages we all speak. It transcends politics, religion, race, gender, sexual preference and everything else that we falsely believe that divides us.
Today, I’ll love.
Courage.
“Today, I have the courage to make the tough choices. Many times I make a choice depending on which is the easier choice. Today, I’ll make the right choice, no matter how hard it may be. I’ll be courageous in everything that I do.
I’ll show courage despite what the outcome may be. I’ll take the risk if the reward is worth it. Today, I become more because I have the COURAGE to step out of my comfort zone and become more. Courage is a choice and I choose to be courageous in all that I do.”
Value.
“Today, I’ll bring value to lives of the people I interact with. I want to leave people with the thought that I added something to their lives. I want to matter so that at the end of my day I can look back and say that there was a reason I woke up that morning.
Today, I want to give more than I take. I want to add at least 1% more to the lives of others than what I take in return. I’ll create value through the posts I write, the book that I’m working on, the advice that I give to my children, and in the work that I do for my clients.
Today, I will add massive amounts of value to my every interaction. With my family, with my friends, with my coworkers. Today I will be more so that I can do more.”
Going Forward
I’ve already set an alarm on my phone that’s labeled with my 3 words. It goes off at 9am, 3pm and at 9pm as a reminder of what my focus should be for that day. For the next year. Love. Courage. Value.
At the end if each day I ask myself these questions and I’m totally honest with myself:
- Did I love everybody that I interacted with today? Did I take the time needed with the people in my life so that they felt that love?
- Did I make the tough choices today? Did I show courageous intent despite the fear of failure?
- Did I add value to the lives of others? Did I give more than I took?
